This mini documentary filmed by Hamblin Imagery on behalf of Red Bull Surfing tells the story of the meteoric rise of one of the biggest surf brands in the world – Hurley.
Starting out as a shaper under the name Hurley’s boards, Bob’s journey to the present day, where he now runs the Hurley mega-brand, is an exciting one to tell. At one point he walked away from the 100 million dollar contract with Billabong? I’m not sure that many business people would do that. But the Surf Industry is somewhat different and full of creative talents that drive the community forward and shape the culture. The birth of Hurley is now seen as one of the boldest moves in surf industry history and is told in this fourth and final chapter of The Ripple Effect.
These days, Hurley is an archetype for all other hopeful companies to follow and you can still find Bob in the shaping bay, mowing foam – in his words, “We try to get through this business world and profession by using the golden rule – treating others how you want to be treated. It can be complicated at times but it actually feels that simple.” Now that’s a quote to live by.
