A 19-year-old student from Enfield has attempted something most hikers wouldn’t dare try—climbing the UK’s tallest mountain in a pair of five-inch stilettos.
For anyone who’s climbed Ben Nevis, they’ll know a large percentage of the climb consists of punishing rocky steps. But Ben Conway decided to ditch a pair of comfy boots for a pair of black patent strappy heels—complete with walking poles and a rucksack all in the name of charity.
Acquiring the name The High Heel Hiker, Conway battled sinking mud, treacherous rocks, gale force winds and torrential rain to climb two-thirds of the 1,345-metre mountain.
The journey proved pretty treacherous and Conway had to stop after sustaining a nasty cut to his ankle. He braved on after making a makeshift bandage, but after five hours of hiking and just 400 metres away from the summit, his stiletto strap broke and he was forced to turn around.
Regardless of whether he reached the summit or not, Conway’s achievement is not only ludicrous but also pretty immense. Anyone who’s ever worn heels that high will know how uncomfortable and painful they are. Climbing a humungous mountain in them is something else! All the money raised was split between LGBT charity Stonewall and Sal’s Shoes.
A brave and inspirational adventurer indeed!
