Why try something new and daring in the daylight when you can race an LED-equipped drone down the track under a full moon? That appears to be the thought process behind Loïc Bruni’s latest antics.
With an enviable reputation as one of the most fearless downhill mountain bikers on the planet, Bruni doesn’t just save his pedal power for the day. His latest breathtaking video, made by director Hadrien Picard, sees him tearing down his Mandelieu home track in the South of France at night with only the light of an overhead drone to guide him.
With the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup season now underway, this crowd favourite is pulling out all the stops.
Starting out at 3 am over the course of three nights, the charismatic 23-year-old raced down the track with a camera drone tight on his wheels. Picard and his crew had to create the drone lighting from scratch, which only offered Bruni 15 metres visibility. Not much given his speed and the demands of the course.
Bruni revealed: “technically it was a good challenge for everyone on the sport side and on the technical side.” He added: “it was a little bit dangerous sometimes. It is really hard nowadays to innovate when you do videos.”
This latest stunt shows Bruni and the crew pushing the limits of the sport and also sports videography. The creation of drones has really changed the way we record and experience such actions. With the sweeping shadows of the trees, the barely lit path and Bruni’s full throttle pace, we were definitely left on tender-hooks.
