Golfers are used to dealing with many ‘dangers’ at their local course—perhaps a heavy rough down the left side, or a pond in front of the green. But for one golfer, at Sweden’s Karlstad GC, the word ‘danger’ suddenly took on its literal meaning, as a moose calf began chasing him across the fairway.
Christer Sjögren, 54, was playing a round of golf with friends at the golf club when the moose calf charged him, forcing him to dance around and hide behind the trees to avoid the animal’s charges.
Across the fairway, fellow golfer Tony Swahn captured video of the humorous incident while having a good laugh at his friend’s expense. The incident was reported by The Local, and the video published on their Facebook page:
As Golf Digest reported, the video is both “hilarious and terrifying”—you really feel for Sjögren, but it’s hard to keep a straight face as you watch the slapstick-esque scene play out.
Speaking to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, Sjögren said:
He followed me the whole time. So I thought I’d start running to see what would happen. When I started running, I realised that wasn’t a good decision.
In the same article, Swahn said:
He [Christer] was mostly afraid the moose was going to attack his golf clubs. But it all worked out. He’s a farmer from Sunnö so he’s tough.
Sjögren told The Local he was a bit frightened and felt stupid for running, thinking it was the wrong thing to do. Luckily, Sjögren joined his friends in safety as the moose eventually gave up the chase and wandered off.
As GrindTV explains, moose actually attack more people than bears and wolves combined, and moose injure more people in America than any other wild animal, second worldwide behind hippopotamuses.
The lesson here: Don’t run away from a moose, particularly if you just got a brand new set of irons.
