An Italian design firm, Carlo Ratti Associati, has created a concept gym which allow fitness fanatics to peddle power their way down the River Seine in Paris.
Developed in collaboration with fitness equipment manufacturer Technogym, the non-profit architecture group Terreform ONE and the urban regeneration institute URBEM, the Paris Navigating Gym project is a human-powered gym boat that cruises along the Seine River by using energy sourced from passengers’ workouts.
Measuring 20-meters long, the fitness vessel can host up to 45 people and features Technogym’s innovative ARTIS machines.
By doing exercise on the ARTIS bikes and cross trainers, guests can seamlessly contribute to powering the boat and in turn sail along the Seine on their route through the city.
Alongside the fitness equipment, the concept gym features augmented-reality screens. These will show guests both the quantity of energy sourced from the workout, and data about the Seine’s environmental conditions tracked in real time by sensors incorporated on the vessel.
The concept not only explores the potential of harnessing human power, but also how this can be used to benefit an ecosystem and provide a new urban experience for city dwellers.
